    On May 11, Swann Galleries will offer a large selection of fifteenth to twentieth century Works of Art on Paper at auction. The sale encompasses old masters, mannerist prints, 19th century works, German Expressionism, and 20th century prints.

A Courtesan

    Among the old master highlights are Rembrandt's The Stoning of St. Stephen, etching and drypoint, 1635, scarce first state (estimate $15,000 to $25,0000); Van Dyck's Portrait of Paulus Pontius etching, circa 1630, scarce second state ($7,000 to $10,000); and prints by Dürer, Callot, Goltzius, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Boucher, and Goya. A superb selection of Italian and Dutch mannerist prints includes Muller's Minerva and Mercury Arming Perseus for his Encounter with Medusa, engraving, circa 1605 ($8,000 to $12,000); and Veneziano's The Carcass (Lo Stregozzo), engraving, circa 1530 ($8,000 to $12,000).

    Notable 19th century prints include Renoir's Le Capeau Epinglé, 2eme planche, lithograph, circa 1898 ($18,000 to $22,000); and Redon's Le Peur, etching, 1866 ($15,000 to $20,000); as well as works by Delacroix, Corot, Manet, Whistler, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Zorn.

   Highlights among modern French prints include Braque's Bass, etching and drypoint, 1911, a scarce cubist print ($40,000 to $60,000); Matisse's Nu accroupi II, aquatint, 1947 ($10,000 to $15,000); and Chagall's L 'Envolée Magique, color lithograph, 1980 ($16,000 to $22,000). A strong selection of Picasso prints from the Vollard Suite includes Minotaur

caressant une dormeuse, drypoint, 1933 ($30,000 to $40,000), Scene Bachique au Minotaur, etching, 1933 ($22,000 to $26,000), and Minotaur, Beveur et Femmes, etching, 1933 ($20,000 to $25,000). Other desirable Picasso's are Salome, an early drypoint, 1905 ($10,000 to $15,000), and the portfolio Metamorphoses d'Ovide, with 30 etchings, 1930-1931 ($30,000 to $50,000).

    German Expressionist prints of interest are Feininger's Aufgehende Sonne, etching and drypoint 1910-1911, and Nolde's Frau N. (Ada Nolde), drypoint, 1911 (each $8,000 to $12,000); and Beckmann's Self-Portrait, woodcut, 1922 ($10,000 to $15,000).

    As always, many American artists are represented in the sale, including Martin Lewis, Thomas Hart Benton, George Bellows, Benton Spruance, and Paul Cadmus.

    The first session of the auction will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11; and the afternoon session is scheduled to commence at 2:30 p.m.
